Santa Maria in Cosmedin

One of our stops today was the medieval church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. This church was built in the 8th century over the remains of the Templum Herculis Pompeiani and is thought to be a place where grain was distributed to the inhabitants of ancient Rome.

The Bocca della Verità is located here and many students enjoyed participating in this touristy, yet entertaining photo op.

The interior of the church is incredibly beautiful with ornate mosaic floors.

We were also able to visit the small crypt below, but many were happy to leave that dark, eerie space and return to the beauty above ground.
