Ancient Ostia--by Caleb

Words and pictures by Caleb

Today we went to Ancient Ostia. This was an old port city in which merchants would dock their ships and trade for other goods. Eventually the trade began to be sucked away by PORTUS (Latin translation: port...). Portus had an artificial port in which large ships could come in all the way to the land. Then Ostia started to become a city in which the Romans could escape the city homes and spend time in their rustic villa in the countryside.

After a short walk for the metro, we arrived as a group to the gate to enter the huge ruins. After a lunch we had picked up from a market that morning, we had a talk as a group setting up a meeting place and time and Trevor let us roam in small groups. After joining Ben and Harry on our way, we plotted a route that went past the bathroom and looped around to the far corner in which Trevor had told us to find the synagogue. We got quite lost on our way there but took some great pictures! The coolest thing was when we regrouped with Trevor by chance and he explained to us all the questions that we had about various things that we had seen so far. We had a lot of freedom to explore and learn for ourselves...

Some of the coolest things that my "group" saw were; a mithrean temple (which has been compared the the ancient Illuminati), a stone maker's mark, and a snake.

  1. Great that you found a mithraeum and knew what it was! Ostia is such a great place just to roam and explore. Looks like you had a perfect day for it! Thanks for the pictures and commentary, Caleb!
