On day 3 in Rome, our first visit was to the Pantheon. The rain was not quite as bad as the previous day, but it was noticeable. We took the metro subway and walked to the Pantheon. Upon arrival, we stood outside for a group photo while waiting for our tickets.
The front of the Pantheon was breathtaking, with numerous large columns making for a grand entrance to the dome shaped building behind it. Once inside, I was stunned by the massive area, as the building didn’t look too large from the outside. Right away, my attention was drawn the oculus in the center of the domed roof, which allowed for the entire interior to be exposed to the open air. Since it was lightly raining, there was almost a light mist coming from the center of the roof, which to me made the building feel almost magical. It was clear the environment had a similar effect on others, as each person was talking in a hushed whisper that conveyed a tone of respect and astonishment.
As I noticed more of the details of the Pantheon, my eyes were drawn next to the impressive marble floor, which had a very polished square design. Lastly, surrounding the walls were various sculptures, paintings, and altars that each told a different story. Personally, I was most impressed by the way it seemed each section of the dome had its own individual meaning and purpose, yet they call came together to create a cohesive, incredible site.
